Knight started Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964 by selling Japanese running shoes out of the trunk of his Plymouth Valiant at track meets. For years, the company teetered on the edge of financial ruin, with banks threatening to cut off credit lines and competitors trying to undercut him at every turn.
The quote resonates because it acknowledges a fundamental truth about building something from nothing: most people either never begin, or they quit when it gets hard. The ones who make it through aren’t necessarily the smartest or the most talented — they’re the ones who refused to stop.
